Specialist studies for nurses – intensive care specialists represent a high degree education of the medical staff with an emphasis on both theoretical and practical knowledge applicable in domestic and foreign health care institutions. Modern concept of teaching and syllabus, highly professional teaching staff with great clinical experience and the most prominent medical institution (Military Medical Academy) guarantee the optimal education of high degree professional staff – specialists. The syllabus covers all the necessary educational areas for nurses – intensive care specialists. The programme of the studies is improved in comparison with the similar programmes in the adjacent countries, Europe and the USA. The methods of teaching include video presentations, seminars, demonstration and exercise of the necessary skills, discussion groups, research methodology and statistics, computer management and tutorship, and finally, the completion of the final specialist thesis. The novelty introduced into the programme refers to the education of nurses with an aim of estimation, monitoring, and health care of patients in critical condition, both in hospital and out of the hospital environment.   

The Purpose of the Programme

The study programme for nurses – intensive care specialists, who treat patients in critical conditions within the emergency care units and wards, has a clearly defined purpose and role within the public health and addresses the increasing needs for health care of the most critical patients; also, it represents a response to the requirement for highly educated nursing staff familiar with the organization, urgent care management in hospitals, clinics, specialized geriatric centers, social protection institutions, etc. In addition to the continuous innovation and introduction of new skills and knowledge within the high medical college, the principles of ethics and humanity are also evolving within the health care, according to the internationally acknowledged ethical codes. 

The Aims of the Programme

The study programme for nurses – intensive care specialists has clearly established aims:

To provide nurses specialist with the maximum of contemporary theoretical knowledge within the area of urgent care and accessory fields, essential for working in the intensive care unit with the most critical patients who require the highest degree of medical care and protection.

  1. To provide nurses specialists with all the necessary skills, methods and technics required by the process of health care of the most critical patient population (general intensive care, as well as special intensive care divided by the types of disease, injury or surgery operation, including both adults and children).
  2. To provide nurses specialists with all the necessary skills, methods and technics required by the process of health care of the most critical patient population (general intensive care, as well as special intensive care divided by the types of disease, injury or surgery operation, including both adults and children).
  3. To provide nurses specialists with methods of control, monitoring and research in the process of intensive care of critical patients, within the contemporary education and tutorship, which would be based on the modern computer and statistical analysis leading to the improvement of the health care and medical education.

The programme comprises two semesters, or one year, with 60 ESPB. The total number of subjects is 11 with 4 optional. The programme is aimed at providing vocational nurses specialists with the maximum of knowledge and skill necessary for treating critical patients in the units of intensive care and for applying modern techniques and methods in the treatment of critical conditions. The acquired title upon graduating is - Professional Nurse Technician - Intensive Care Specialist.
